Home Safety: From a Locksmith’s Perspective

More and more complaints about cases of burglary here in Brisbane has been reported for the last 3 years and the crime rates are dramatically increasing for about 20% to 30% every each year. The Police Authority has been very active in promoting safety measures to every house owner in town.

Brisbane Locksmiths had been doing a great job so far. Aside from their everyday endeavors with cases of burglary, they happen to serve quality training and tips that can somehow help you avoid certain problems regarding the safety of your home.

1.       Keep valuable things away from the drawer. Instead of putting your jewelries or money in a box or a vault, you can somehow hide it into your kids bedroom. Most burglars are smart when it comes to an unsecured entries, but their weakness comes in “searching”. Often times, the target is always the master bedroom and they tend to leave the kids' room untouched. Kitchen and bathroom could be a safe place too.

2.       Install security gadgets to areas not visible from your doorstep. Showing those burglars that you have a high technology gadget won’t set them away, but instead it will lure them to get near you. So don’t make it too obvious and don’t give them an idea that your house actually contains alarm security system or a CCTV camera.

3.       Lower the volume of your telephone ringer. You might not believe it, but burglars nowadays are sneakier than ever. When you received voice mails and they overheard it, the assumptions of your house being empty is a high possibility. In this sense, they could however use it as a sign when and where to break in.

4.       Keep car keys right next to you. (Especially when you are sleeping). One of the best way to prevent burglary at your house and even in the area. When you heard a weird noise or any suspicious act that you might not be familiar with, you can always use your car keys for instant patrol. The alarm sound will keep those burglars away from the premises.

5.       Choose the best Locksmiths in your area. However, you might not need the best of the best as long as he’s worth every trust and penny. It’s not always about how fast and reliable, they are working, it’s how much they devote themselves to help you and your family to be safe. Better to be safe than sorry.

Tips To Avoid Burglary

Safety had become an issue these past few days and it has been rampant and police are somehow having problems in fixing them. So before everything gets worse and more complicated, here’s a list of things that owners should do to protect their homes.

Strengthen your Sliding Glass Doors – Since it is vulnerable for break ins, glass doors are often picked-resistant. Most burglars are amateurs, but some of them are experts. So this would give them enough time to study your house and make it a training ground. So better strengthen your glass doors for your own convenience.

Always check your locks – Every item of locks could malfunction and putting too much confidence on such object may lead to disappointment. Check your locks regularly and make sure that they are functioning properly so you could replace them if necessary.

Leave lights on – If you happen to plan a long week of vacation, you could leave your lights on for the whole week. It is one way of keeping away burglars from your home so it wouldn’t give them an idea that the house was empty. You can also attach automatic timers that could turn it on and off during the day. You can also upgrade your lighting system  for a maximum outdoor security.

Avoid leaving keys on your doormat – One of the most common mistakes of the house owners are tempting the burglars to break in. Always secure your keys in your purse or wallet or try a key chain to compile them. Make a duplicated copy of the keys and segregate it to the members of the house for easy access.

Always activate your alarm systems – Alarms won’t work if it’s not activated. Common misconception of house owners is forgetting to set it up and buying the system form a not so trustworthy shops. It could be an expensive thing to buy, but it will be worth it.

Hide your valuable things in an obvious place – Burglars nowadays would encounter difficulties on big objects so they would prefer small things like jewelries, laptops, cash, cell phones, and etc. Since these objects are easily kept inside a drawer, vault, and tables, you could hide your items in a much obvious place that burglars wouldn’t think you’d hide it. Examples are kitchen cabinets, broom closet, basement, and attic.

Install deadbolt – Many locksmiths would advise this to you. This lock would give you extensive support when it comes to burglary. Deadbolts are often hard to break by pins of thin metal for it holds a solid lock form the inside of your house.

Practice locking everything every five minutes – recklessness can cause a lot of trouble, so better start changing the habit of setting things aside. Practice locking your doors and windows. Lock it when you go to bed, when you visit a neighbor, when you plan on going away, just lock everything.

Spend much on security – Instead of paying landscapers a lot of money to give beauty to your lawn, spend it wisely for security purposes. Do not compromise or think about the cost of an effective alarm system. The much money you spend on your alarms, the safer you get.

Know your locks

With the expanding crime rate nowadays involving burglary and intruding, how much faith do you have in your household security?? Are you sure that you can sleep safe and sound without thinking that your house won't be breached by unknown assailants? Most would answer these questions with “I hope so”. Frankly speaking, I don't know myself if I'm totally safe with my house security because thieves and burglars are getting smarter as time goes by. The only thing we can do for starters is to know different kinds of security measures (for example, locks) and make a series of combinations across the house.

We mainly have 3 basic groups of locks. These are basic locks, resistant locks and high security locks. Knowing the difference in each type will give us clues where to put them for maximum efficiency.

Basic locks include locks for file cabinets, storage and luggage, and some generic padlocks. These locks tend to easily give in to lock picking and bypass as well as brute force. Novices and skilled attackers would have no problem dealing with this type of lock. This is only good for putting away and locking things like kitchen and garage tools out of the reach of children.

Resistant locks will keep novice lock-picker away because this type of lock has a more complex design. Though they are more resistant to lock picking, they tend to give in to brute force like swimming for example. The good thing is without proper tools like a bolt cutter for example, the intruder would have to make an ample amount of noise alerting the house owner and people near the place. Spool and mushroom, iron bolt locks are good example of this. This kind of lock is good for the garage and gate of you have one and add more if needed.
High-security locks are in whole different level. This lock that only professionals can undo and will give the lesser skilled a big headache. Electronic locks are a good example of this type as it would not only require number codes, but also a key or a remote. Often time burglars will stay away from houses with locks like this because not only will take a lot of time to break in, but also good tools are needed for this (they would need to have an EMP for this or a decrypting device). This lock would cost a hefty sum, but in place will give better security all in all. Good examples of this would be cam locks, wireless electronic deadbolts. This kind of lock is very much applicable for front doors and coupled with cctv's would prove to be almost burglar proof unless you are forced by someone to open the door yourself.

Well, this is not in the list because mostly millionaires, billionaires and banks use this type of security lock. The unbreakable locks such time secured locks, retinal pattern locks, fingerprint locks and face recognition locks fall into this category. This type of lock cannot be breached unless the owner is forced to open the lock itself, which would require abduction, but that's another story.

These are all the type of locks to choose from and where to put them will be at the owner's discretion, but be warned locks do cost a sum but one should not compromise safety over a few pennies.

Burgling: A Profession

As a relation to locksmith's thing... people often get mislead when it comes to the perfection of crimes. Actually, burgling goes with a process too, that even they develop after a massive of attempts.

According to most scenarios of criminal cases made to study by Columbian Inspector McDavis, burglars are professional thieves that master the art of perfection. They will spend almost months, weeks, and even years just to achieve their goal.

One method that they already disregarded is the forcible entry. If you happen to experience it or know some people who had been a victim, professional burglars call it “noob” since it’s a traditional way of entering a house. In most instances, it can be the cause of their criminal case since police can now identify them with the use of certain gadgets like CCTV cameras, fingerprinting, and other highly customized equipment.

Once your house became a target, there is no escape from it. The only thing you’ll discover is that you actually lost almost everything of your valuable things inside your house. And the sad part is, you became a victim of an unwanted burgling attack that you can no longer resist.

Burglars are now innovative, creative, and friendly at the same time. They will manage to get to your house no matter what. As they plan ahead, they will try to study every inch of detailed information about your house so you might have to be aware of reading people’s gestures and approach. Not all burglars are rugged look. Some of them can wear casual attire and look good on the outside. They can be a utility men or even professional broker as you know. In today's world, they might even look overdress and presentable so it would be a problem to identify.

Burglars nowadays are often too conscious about your house structures. They would ask a lot of questions and they might be a bit tricky, so you will definitely fall into their scheme. In this sense, avoid answering questions regarding your security measures. Because in any ways.. they would probably gather all the information they would need for them to start the planning.

In such highly modified equipment, modern burglars can somehow access a lot of security measures that you thought would be impossible. Sensors, swipe cards, pin codes, fingerprint passwords, and a lot more. Aside from that, if doors are penetrable, windows come in as their option.

Not every security equipment is perfect. Even those highly maintained alarm-systems can start to malfunction. So to be at eased, checking your installed security devices is a must since burglars are exceptional when it comes to monitoring and establishing a program to get on the go. And since they are more relaxed and customized, you better have to be careful on dealing with people that comes in strangely.

“Burgling has been a common crime in all over the world.” says Charles Sczuroski. And the most effective way to prevent it is to know your enemies so you can be aware before you could regret anything in the end. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
